ModCloth is like net-a-porter for smaller independent designers.
I have seen their stuff and they really have great things at fantastic prices.

I have read their reviews and they are mixed.
Some people are raving about the goods they've purchased and some are cribbing about the fits, but hey, at least the reviews are out there , not hidden !! You can decide for yourself.

I personally feel this is a great website http://www.modcloth.com/ ; and rather than have a hundred thousand more new "sales/discount websites for high-end designer wear" I would prefer to have have many more really good "Indie fashion" websites like this one. Especially in India.

Ah, about this bag - its quite beautiful , it has that luxury feel to it and its just the right size too. I wonder if the gold sequins peeking out, might be a bit too much , I would have preferred maybe a good heavy satin with equestrian prints or something , and also gold colored hardware, not silver.

But really, these are very small details, overall the bag is fabulous.
Apparently it is made of some "vegan friendly" material , if you like to be careful about such things. And that price...incredible!

The unbeatable team of Angela and Christopher has transformed Burberry , my favorite fashion brand (even before the transformation), from " Charming old-fashioned, self-effacing British " to "Edgy , young and aggressively urbane Brit".

The best part - it seems like a natural evolution from the inside out, not just a hastily put on mask.

Burberry has come really far by retaining the parts of its heritage that still work well , while discarding the rest of the inessential baggage , not a mean task for a brand that old.

I would love to see an in-depth interview, where we see Angela and Christopher talk about this journey and how they worked it all out. If ever there was an example of great synergy between strategic and creative minds - this has to be it.

Sure, it isn't as refined and expensive looking as "Lady Noire " directed by some famous French director (Olivier Dahan of Ma Vie En Rose fame, actually) , but it is a great marketing tactic for a new fashion brand.

The Digital Luxury Experience.

It is really great to find out that Luxury buyers are highly digitally engaged , almost twice as much as the regular (non-luxury) consumer. While old Luxury Brands with a hundred or more years of history and a well established name have an edge, it is not impossible to build a new Luxury Brand online.

So, if you have a great product that is "luxurious" in every sense except the age of the Brand, and the deep pockets for marketing, you don't have to worry that you might not find the right target audience simply because you don't have a stunning boutique on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris.

Of course having a wonderful old history and beautiful boutiques help , in fact those are the charms of a luxury brand , but until you have your own brand history and you can afford that boutique, you don't have to despair - there is plenty you can do to get your new Brand established .
We are lucky, we live in these times of digital marketing.

I have to say I find this video endearingly " Phirangi" (foreign) and totally hilarious.
This same woman would never explain things so patiently, to another Indian , she would probably be selling or buying vegetables and bargaining nastily.

As we all know India is mildly schizophrenic as a country, not in a debilitating way, people from other countries actually find that amazing about us.
But even we Indians can be caught off-guard sometimes...this woman for instance, has no idea how fantastic her story sounds and that is what is drop dead funny.

H&M has captured a certain kind of India very well, but I always wonder when they will capture the other India ...the emerging "fashion crowd" of India.

Indian brands are already engaging with the young fashion crowd, but It would be interesting to see the Indian "High street fashion set" through H&M's eyes.

Thakoon - Another down-to-earth modern designer I like

When I saw the September Issue and noted this new whiz kid designer Thakoon being personally promoted by Anna Wintour, I thought to myself ' Wow , is he lucky ! Let us see if this guy stays grounded and uses this amazing opportunity to do great work, or whether he gets carried away and stops focusing on his designs'.

I am happy to note that so far, he is really managing to do well, despite all the publicity and positive reviews he has been getting, he has retained his approachable and polite nature at the same time he comes across as confident and savvy. He is also definitely doing some great work. In fact what seems very nice about him is that when you talk to him he seems more interested in discussing his work than the general goings on in the fashion world.

His style is " wearable and casually sophisticated with a little edgy twist " which is fantastic, and not an easy balance to achieve on a consistent basis.

So here is wishing the young designer all the best, I hope he stays the way he is, which is
open , relaxed, curious and connected to the real world.

Lately ,I have been advised to reconsider my "singlehood" by several well meaning male friends through direct remarks ; I appreciate both their simple candour and genuine concern and I really do love them for caring, but I feel they just don't get me anymore !

Also, as is inevitable I suppose, I have been subject to subtle and not-so-subtle barbs about "settling down" and "growing up" , by both much-married and soon-to-be-married women , some of these women are not even really close to me , but they act as though it is one of their life's greatest achievements to have "snagged" a man and therefore their well-deserved right to talk down at any single woman.I really have nothing to say to such women, who I am sure care less about my future "loneliness" than about trumpeting their superior "femininity" , which obviously needs a man ( and later a child) to validate it. Because they seem to understand and care so little about me and my feelings, I feel absolutely no need to clarify and put forth my true opinions , and I simply avoid serious discussions with them.

Still , if these women want to delude themselves that all single women are secretly jealous of them and their fabulousness , they are welcome to entertain themselves, I might even play along till I get bored, YAWN !
Finding someone you are sure you like (with flaws and all) and want to spend the rest of your life with, and then having them feel the same way, is a rare and beautiful thing and no doubt an important milestone in a person's life. But in my opinion, to frantically seek a partner and then to hang on to him with fierce desperation, just because being single scares you, is - to put it mildly- unromantic and even slightly pathetic.

I definitely don't want to be in that kind of a relationship, if one can call it that, and frankly I see too many of these everywhere, to believe that a genuine relationship is as easy to find as these women make it sound , maybe my definition of a "real" relationship is simply different from that of other women.

I truly believe that in the sphere of romantic relationships things will happen if and when they are meant to happen, it is a highly personal thing and there is no point trying to pretend there is a formula that works for everyone - there is NO such formula.
At business and at work a certain amount of navigation and manouvering is required to get ahead , but when it comes to personal relationships I think these "scripts" fail.
Of course, worried parents and well meaning friends will always want to intervene and see if they can help things in some way and that is okay, to an extent. But, after a point when you have tried to explain your views over and over again, it gets a little wearisome and you begin to wonder why everyone is trying so hard to find some sinister (or sad ) story behind why you choose to be single .Why don't they want to believe that you are quite happy ?

The truth is simply that , I haven't come across anyone , with whom I can imagine creating a whole new kind of life . I am happy in my present single status, and busy trying to get some of my cherished dreams off the ground, why would I bring in additional complexity into an already tough and busy life , I don't think I have the required "bandwidth" ???

Not to mention , this isn't an irreversible decision and maybe in the future, when I am ready, I will find someone who is right for me. I have been in enough relationships to know what I want and I think , when I find it, I will know how to keep it, thank you!I am not insecure about my "lonely" future right now, and , how is a man going to secure my future anyway ? Can he really be everywhere with me or protect me from every calamity that strikes me?

Companionship ? Why can't I have a network of friends and other like-minded people, who care enough to be there for me in times of trouble, isn't that all one can hope for anyway ?

This is a choice I have made based on my priorities at the moment , I want my freedom to try and do all the things I dream of , and If I can't meet the right person along the way while being who I am and doing what I want to, well...I am quite happy to be by myself.

If that is making some people jealous and/or nervous, then they'll just have to learn to handle it !!

Meanwhile , I don't like being forced to constantly defend and argue my point fanatically, and I refuse to do so.

The last time I felt like this about a cape was probably when I was in 3rd grade and I wanted to dress up as "Red riding hood" for a fancy-dress competition at school .
I actually bullied my poor mother into getting a gross little red velvet cloak stitched
for me by the local tailor.

The episode didn't quite go as planned because I seem to remember feeling a little silly as people glared at me uncomprehendingly. So I never wanted to wear the cape after the show, which by the way, was won by some dull and predictable little bunny or butterfly, I can't remember.

That is probably why I have always thought "cloaks and capes" only work well in fairy tales not in real life.
But the way I feel now about this really grown-up cloak is quite different!
It seems surprisingly wearable and very very stylish , it will probably bring on glares of a totally different kind- the kind that leave you feeling smug.

Ah ! Nice...I love these not just because they are YSL and but of course they look great,
but because (and I know- I risk sounding absurd here) this is almost the exact same design as I had submitted for one of my accessories collections at OYFD Marangoni.
Except, mine were "Greek warrior/Spartan" inspired.
The furry part was red (like a Greek warriors helmet) and the heel was metallic gold with engravings like a Greek helmet , so was the platform and the body of the shoe was oily looking deep blackish-brown leather...it was beautiful.

"Currently crushing on ..." - why virtual window shopping will (err, might) save the world.

I am feeling rather pleased with myself. I have discovered lately that sudden urges to splurge ( hey that rhymes urge to splurge ) needn't be suppressed at all , they are easily handled through virtual shopping followed by blogging or tweeting about what you loved- Its almost like the real thing.

So, I thought to myself - why not share some of my "I-would-buy-this-in-a-heartbeat-if-I-had-a-teensy-bit-more-credit-on-my-card " kind of discoveries on my blog !! And also why I love them (Obviously there has to be something timelessly chic about them). Many people do this and now I know why they are happy , consistent bloggers.

These Objets de désir, would be from my favorite online window shopping destinations (the whole worlds' probably) net-a-porter and  theoutnet and many others , sometimes even sets from Polyvore could appear here, and it would obviously mean I want almost everything on that set.

I think It's quite brilliant - get rid of the immediate need to see and discuss awe-inspiring designs and droolworthy items, as well as generate a little (actually quite a bit more , considering how many things I am lusting after, at any point in time) more content for my woefully un-updated blog !!

Yes , yes , I know some people would think this is like cheating, and to be a really " better " (recession matured and responsible ) person you must get rid of the desire to own expensive beautiful objects and start thinking about saving for that proverbial rainy day and saving the planet etc.

I agree, with the first part - money has to be kept aside for the rainy days/years !!
Im not sure about humans saving the planet, frankly, I think its a tad too late for that...but this might help as much as anything else!
But , not to digress,I think this one of those things where cheating (of the type I am talking about in this post- harmless) is not only acceptable, its highly recommended.
Think, nicotine patches and AA , support systems - they help !!

Whats the problem with ogling at fabulously designed clothes, bags and shoes online ? None whatsoever- that I can see .Okay, you would probably spend a lot more time surfing than you should , but whatever...who doesn't? Plus your blog isn't such a disgrace anymore...

And- I have an unlimited surfing package from my cable guy, so there.

They say you turn to your "best" friend when you are angry and disappointed with things and you basically just want someone to hear you out and make soothing noises, while you rant on about how unfair and crappy the Big Bad World is  - for the seven hundredth time in a week.

NOTE- Umm, I think its my writerly responsibility to state the obvious rule here , even though I do not consider myself an expert on the matter - DO NOT try this repeatedly with your romantic partner or with immediate family member (the ranting , that is) keep it for trusty old friends ( on a rotation basis preferably) or diaries.

Now; all my best friends are permanently "out of town" , obviously doing more exciting things , or are leading far saner lives than me at the moment and are thus going through "normal" problems that one can discuss calmly over a nice social dinner, things like -why the Boss is acting weird these days or which car maker is offering better post-recession service packages or which microwave oven is better suited to cook italian meals, which gym has more free treadmills at 7:00 am, and the like. Nice problems to have and discuss.

Well, I was doing the same about a year back, that is, doing great stuff that kept me busy and happy ... and I had similarly nice little challenges to keep me perky - this brand of pantone markers or that one ? This metro station or the next one ? Should I hand draw my illustrations or go flat out on photoshop? This texture or the other one ? Do I have too many skirts in my collection? Is my mood-board too contrived or just clever enough ? and so on...bliss!!

But ever since I got back from Paris, its like someone ( Are you listening God? ) is hell-bent on making me pay for the great time I had. The past year has been the most "stuck in the same dumb place" kind of year of my entire adult life so far- in fact its been a proper groundhog day remake.
To be honest , I keep hoping all the time for a "Bruce Almighty" to happen to me ...but never mind.

As a consequence of the past year of ( relative) non-progress, coming right on the heels of a previous great year of "living my dreams in Paris", every new disappointment is magnified ten fold, every little delay seems like life is slipping by me , and my "discussions" tend to get somewhat -ah- intense , at the moment .

But honestly, I simply don't feel like talking about all this internal churn stuff to anyone , because its a phase I am going through...where I feel involving other people might -

A) Somehow reduce my ability to, or prevent me from internalizing the experiences and learning everything from them that I am supposed to, and/or
B) Force them to form a  permanent negative opinion of me based on this transitory restless phase and most importantly
C) Somehow break my fragile belief in my course of action and send me back to the path I was on earlier which lead me to greater security but away from my dreams.

So who ( whom ?) do I turn to ? My poor hapless blog- of course !!
For the first time, I am happy technology hasn't advanced far enough to create blogs that talk back to you and tell you to stop taking out your frustrations on them or ones that form permamnet opinions about you like " ranter loser low-tech life form" ; although I feel by now, there should already have been blogs with mood sensors and "friendly" applications that can make the soothing noises I was telling you about...

I know this is probably not very generous of me, after all these are friends I am talking about who have seen me through ups and downs and have stood by me and my dreams earlier and are the least likely to form overly negative opinions of me. On the other hand, these are also the only people who's opinions about me , actually matter to me , I agree, not to such an extent that I will change myself or my goals completely for them (I don't see myself doing that for anyone, perhaps, and nor do I think anyone else should do it for someone) but they do .

But this time it is different, this is by far going to be one of the biggest long term challenges I have set for myself, the challenge of wanting to and eventually setting up a successful business of my own.

There will be many, many , such points along the way which will test me very severely. It is also going to be hard for people I live with day in and day out, but I don't want it to be harder for them than it has to.

So no random ranting at them.

It is quite clear , I am going through the tough transition period that every entrepreneur or aspiring entrepreneur goes through. Its all documented out there in great detail by far better people...nothing new.

Why then, am I so grumpy ? Because my strategy is not working and I cannot figure out why because it still seems sound to me. As a result of not being able to figure out what exactly the problem is , I am getting a little paranoid that someone ( God or Human) is actually trying to sabotage my plans or trying to railroad me into doing something I DO NOT wish to do.

I don't like having to deal with invisible things and "hidden factors" that are without proof and I don't know how to go about gathering information on whether someone ( God or not) is after me- I am trying to work out all the various possible scenarios in my mind - shadow boxing is the word that comes to mind- very tiring !!

The plan was to get back from the sabbatical and go back to work as a marketer preferably in the field of my future business (fashion /retail) and work for a few more years before taking the final bow and easing into my future business.

The imagined conversation in my mind went like this -

Me- " Here I am, I am back from a great learning adventure, I feel fresher and more ready to take on the world than I have ever felt in the past 10 years. I have these particular set of skills to offer, and this is the going market rate for those , I will take a smaller hike than you would offer the next person waiting to be interviewed , because of the recession and all and because I suppose I should think I am lucky to get this break , and my pay is still far lesser than some bloated salaries I have seen for people who do virtually nothing. I want to have my own business in the future so I am not particularly looking for thrilling career advancement opportunities, but since I am a fairly ethical person I shall stick to my end of the bargain and do my job well if you stick to your end of the bargain and treat me with dignity , stay transparent, allow me to do my job and pay me on time. So - will you hire me ? "

Hiring manager- " Sure Veena , this is a fairly straightforward scene,  you know the job , your quoted rate is fair ( actually quite below the maximum budget we had in mind , and that is fantastic , but I don't need to tell you those details) and you join in a month. Please be honest, professional, and deliver on your KRAs for as long as you work here. And when you leave, or we choose to lay you off , please leave on a cordial note because after all it is a free market and people are free to pursue their career goals, just as the organization is free to do what is best for the business"

But all my best laid plans have not worked as they were supposed to and the stoopid recession which was supposed to be over by now , is dragging on like its in Love with the world...not to mention Obama , who is adding to the confusion by panicking the Indian IT companies.

I haven't landed that perfect "comeback" job ( read- decent salary and respectable responsibilities) which would have been so easy in 2007 -2008. I have had one offer which I simply cannot take up because it is not the right fit,and frankly made me want to cry. The management in this company (according to my judgement ) would have haggled for every little penny of my pay and also the future Marketing spends, using the recession , what else , as an excuse.

That kind of dedication , where I fight like a Lion for my ideas and my people , I reserve only for when I am running my own show-Thank you. In an organization where I don't run the show I don't expect to be playing a leadership role only a managerial one.

Stupid and arrogant of me ? Maybe... and, that's part of the turmoil - doubting your own decisions.
Also I have learnt the words" future entrepreneur" and "aspiring entrepreneur" make you an untouchable in the corporate world. So when they ask you "where do you want to be in five year ? " you are supposed to say " Doing this same lovely job !! ". Silly me to have thought ambition was seen as a GOOD thing.

Thankfully some things are begining to look better now, and my black mood has lifted.
After this much ranting , the great depression would lift !!

Mercifully I have the perenially optimistic mind-set that is so crucial for a future entrepreneur and leader ( Please read - The one thing you need to know by Marcus Buckingham to actually get what I am saying here).

So thank you blog , for being there for me when I need to rant.
I promise to not ignore you for such long periods from now on.

I have realized , quite belatedly (I must admit I am a slow learning blogger), that it is not necessary to stick to any one type/format of post on a blog.
At least, not for my kind of blog...

So I have decided, apart from my longish posts on "style classics", in order to improve my post rate ( at least I am honest), I shall put up shorter but more frequent posts (as in, twice a week, hopefully) .

Here is my plan to keep it short and sweet-I pick up an interesting and random fashion /art/lifestyle/design/movies (etc) related image, featuring something that is probably a "twist on a classic" and has captured my attention, for whatever reason/s.
I just put it up here (the picture) and simply put my thoughts below it, as a short two line caption , on why I find the image interesting.

I know its not a "new' idea, but why should it be, as long as it is interesting and fun?

Of course, I would love it if all those reading the post also jump in and put up their witty and funny comments, I mean, that is sort-of the point of doing this...

Derbys & Oxfords:return of the dandy shoes.

Let me be honest, I had no idea of the exact difference between a Derby and an Oxford shoe , till I started snooping around on the net to get some information for this post.
I knew one was more formal than the other, but not much else.
It turns out, a lot of people want to clarify such things all the time and there is surprising amount of discussion and “advice giving” taking place on the net about topics like this.
Great, because in the process of digging for information , I learnt more about cap-toed and wing-tipped and saddled oxfords , and about brogueing and welting and what not, than I thought possible! I also realized how little I really know...
But, before I try and explain the difference between these two types of shoes, let me express why I think Oxford/Derby shoes are a classic style.
Firstly, just look at them, they are distinctive and good looking shoes, especially the two tone variety (called “spectators” by the way). I have always been such a huge fan of Black & White dressing!
Secondly,they have been around for ages , lending themselves to modern re-interpretations, which in my opinion is an inherent trait of the classic.
Now ask yourself - do those oxford/derby style flats look dated and frumpy, or would they work with the season's short dresses & cropped trousers in the coolest, most nonchalant sort of way ? See what I mean? They don't always have to be worn in the 'dandy' manner.
The fact that they are back in a big way, means that people simply like this shoe!
Okay, now for difference- apparently a Derby has open lacing, which means that the tongue is made of the same bit of leather ( called the vamp ) that runs over the top of your foot and down to the tip of your toes.
The eyelets for the lacing are overlapping bits of leather at the sides of the shoe ( called the quarters) and on Derbys, they are not stitched to the tongue at the bottom which provides more flexibility and comfort making the Derby suitable for outdoor/casual wear.
An Oxford, is supposed to have closed lacing- on a shoe with closed lacing, the vamp is sewn on top of the quarters, and the tongue is usually a separate piece.
Oxfords are sometimes called Balmorals, and Derbys are called Bluchers.
Not many people know or care about these distinctions anymore, and both the shoes are now considered formal/office wear for men.
But here is the bottomline, I quite love the feminine Oxford/Derby inspired shoes , both flat and high-heeled, they seem to go really well with tailored shorts, cropped trousers and in a crazy way even with short dresses.

Today on Linkedin I created a new group called Indian fashion writers and bloggers.
Because, I would love to get to know the Indian fashion literati.

So anybody who knows an Indian fashion writer/blogger, please forward this to them and do ask them to check out the group on Linkedin.
This group is meant to be an informal platform for Indian (based in India) fashion writers and bloggers to get to know each other and exchange news, views and information.
They need not be focused on any one aspect of the fashion business (like just design) or on the Indian fashion industry only, in fact the more diverse their interests or topics of blogging , the better.
For instance, I am trying to focus only on "style classics" in my blog.

When India got its Independence, she pushed the traditional boundaries of a Maharani's role, and entered modern politics by winning the biggest landslide victory ever recorded ( Apparently mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records).Thereafter, she was elected several times and was devoted to furthering the lot of her people, especially women.
With her noble bearing, style, intelligence and classic good looks, she was considered one of the most beautiful women alive and indeed in 1960 Vogue mentioned her in its list of ten most beautiful women in the world, describing her as a “dream in saree and jewels”.
In her graceful chiffon sarees, impeccably coiffured hair and elegant pearls, she could mingle with the most distinguished visitors from across the globe and look every inch like the stunning Indian Queen she was.
She became an inspiration and a style icon for the entire nation.
She epitomized what a true princess should be like.
Age only seemed to add more charm to her personality, and as news of her demise ( in July 2009) at the age of 90 years, spread across the country, people felt a genuine sense of loss, and mourned for an era gone by.
Even today, her name is mentioned regularly by some of the most stylish Indian women, as a style icon and an inspiration they look up to.
It is not everyday such women are born.

Trench Connection : why the trench coat will always stay at the front-line of fashion

If there is one piece of outerwear that stylish people love, without reserve, it is the trench coat.

Although both Burberry and Aquascutum both claim to have invented this iconic piece of clothing,today, the luxury brand Burberry, the house that invented the Gabardine fabric, is synonymous with the trench coat and truly makes some of the most fabulous ones.

Ladies & Gentlemen , doff your hats : why the Trilby remains a symbol of easy style.

The name Trilby was apparently derived from the play based on George du Maurier's 1894 gothic novel by the same name. A hat of this type was first worn in the London production of the play, by the actress playing the lead part ( of Trilby O' Ferrall, the novel's heroine) and came to be known as the Trilby.
The sleek shape with it's deeply indented crown , pinched front and narrow brim was an instant hit. Sometimes the brim is sharply upturned at the back.
A Fedora could be considered an American Trilby, with a slightly wider brim.
The Trilby became really big in the 1920s as a casual , men's sporting hat to be worn outdoors to the races, later it replaced the more formal bowlers and homburgs as a hat to be worn with suits. Women still wore them but not as much as the men !
It remained one of the most popular hats till the 1960s , when hats stopped being considered a staple in a man's wardrobe. This Hat has also been associated with Jews, British Police Inspectors and Jazz musicians.
Trilbys were usually made of rabbit hair felt and later wool or tweed, but these days both the trilby and the fedora are available in a wide range of colors and materials that make them suitable for both summer and winter wear. My personal favorite would be a Grey or Beige felt Trilby, with maybe, just a self colored narrow ribbon and a smallish bow! So Chic .
Not as popular as before , even today the Trilby makes its presence felt, as movie stars and celebrities from Micheal Jackson to Agenyss Deyn, Victoria Beckham and Justin Timberlake, and many others, have all worn it to make a statement in starry charisma .
Whatever the history, the fact is that the Trilby is now considered unisex ,undeniably stylish and a little bit romantic. Above all, its a true classic.
Get a Trilby and add that dash of panache to your everyday outfits, that little bit of zaniness that sets apart a truly stylish dresser.

Hermès issues two collections of scarves in a year, and every scarf has a name. About twelve designs are created in each collection usually consisting of six new designs and six reissues updated with new colors and/or a small change like a contrast border. Sometimes designs are reissued after decades.
A regular Hermès scarf (if the word “regular” can at all be used for Hermès) has anywhere from five to forty-two colors and each color is printed by hand using silk screens. Also, there are a limited number of monochromatic scarves called carrè finesse. The hem or “roule” is hand rolled by skilled women called roulotteuses.
The most popular materials used are silk twill, silk chiffon and a blend of cashmere and silk. The Hermès scarf is available in three standard sizes, the most popular one being the full carrè size: 35" x 35".
A scarf needs almost two years from design conceptualization to finishing; and can take up to 2000 hours of work. It undergoes several rigorous quality checks along the way before it finally makes it inside the famed orange box packaging.
And there, it awaits the lucky woman who gets to own it.
Sometimes several women might own it …because not only do daughters and grand-daughters hold on to them as gorgeous heirlooms, but vintage Hermès scarves are greatly sought after in the collectors’ market. Some things simply get better with time.

Indigo Route: why the classic dark wash jeans are the way to go for all seasons.

I love the fact that dresses are back in such a big way, and skirts and trousers. But, while I love wearing one of those when I am feeling smart and dressy, at heart I am a true-blue jeans lover and nothing will change that.
Let me put it like this -if someone took away all my pairs of jeans, promising to replace them with any number of lovely dresses, skirts or pants that I could wish for, from the season’s best collections; I would still feel really lost and upset.
Thank god, that’s not about to happen any time soon.
Apparently the world still loves its denim. So, happily, denim and consequently jeans are evolving in many exciting ways and as a result a “jeans wearer” of any age, build or attitude has a mind boggling variety to choose from.
Great! But, some would say this defeats the whole point of jeans, which is –simple, no fuss, low-on-maintenance and high-on-attitude garment.
I say- it’s great to have choice, and after all, you can still choose to go for a classic.The dark wash, mid-rise, straight-fit jeans are certainly a style everyone must own.
It’s a style that looks great on everyone and goes with almost everything. The best part it has a remarkable slimming effect! Almost as good as black!
I would add here, that if you own only one pair of dark indigo jeans, then keep them as basic as possible which means no major distress , fading, embellishments, whiskers, zippers etc.
A slight stretch would be good and go for really good quality denim so that the color stays true. Oh! and wash them reversed.
If you want to be a little more adventurous try skinnies, boot-cuts or the 70s flared style.
The faded and distressed versions are really cool too.
Now, happily wear them with crisp white shirts; add black stilettos, a large slouchy black bag and classy diamond jewelry for effortless daytime glamour or wear with a black t-Shirt and ankle booties for laidback chic or with plaid shirts and tan boots for country inspired charm…the options are unlimited.
"Why not black denim then, aren't they more versatile" you ask?
Well, black jeans are another classic must own piece and I shall elaborate on their virtues in another post; but the fact is- jeans are not really jeans if they aren’t blue…actually that sounds a little too extreme, but it’s true that you simply can’t replace a classic indigo pair.

First created in 1819, the trinity ring remains a great symbol of eternal love and one of the most iconic pieces of jewelry ever created by Cartier. Minimalist in design, it consists of three interconnected rings of white, pink and yellow gold in 18 karats, symbolizing friendship, love and finally the declaration of fidelity.

The Chanel 2.55 is the other bag you must know (apart from the Birkin). The 2.55 in its name refers to the first release of the 2.55 bag in February of 1955. The Chanel 2.55 was revolutionary for its times, because it featured a shoulder chain strap which allowed women to keep their hands free during cocktail parties, and it was highly successful because it was elegant, practical and just the perfect bag for every occasion.

Secondly, the reissue has an all chain handle, while the classic has leather interwoven between the chain links.

In case you hadn't noticed, the khakis and Safari looks have been making quite a comeback in the past couple of spring/summer collections. The difference is, instead of the standard crinkled cottons and relaxed silhouettes (over-popularized by GAP) that are all about being laidback, the new safari/khaki look is much more sophisticated and even luxurious.

Khakis can go Safari and they can even go Military, but in this post i shall refer to Khaki more from the Safari point of view.

Well, according to me, the "Safari look" is pretty classic and while we may see ebbs and flows in it's popularity it will never really "Go away".

So what could add that twist of glam to an otherwise standard summer staple?

i think the key difference lies in the fabrics and silhouettes- the fabrics now being used are more glamorous, flowy chiffons, crepe silks and even satins with a soft sheen; and the shapes are far more sharply tailored and feminine than those plain bulky trousers, practical skirts and masculine shirts we associate khakis with.

Basically it helps to remind yourself that you are not actually setting out on a safari, its all about portraying the spirit of summer, the luxury of free time and travels to exotic places .

Bringing in touches of Gold, Bronze, Amber or bright Orange, in the form of accessories could take the outfit up a notch or two. And, don't worry about pairing high-heels with your safari look, remember you are not shooting for a re-make of "Out of Africa".

Not surprisingly, what also works well with the Khaki/Safari look is adding elements of vibrant animal and/or tribal prints and accessories (in neutrals or warm tones) .

So go ahead pull out those beautiful desert neutrals and see how you glam them up.
